Duchess is a garter stitch shawlette with a simple diamond lace pattern designed to show off the rich gemstone colours of both tonal and solid sock yarns. It has just enough lace to keep things interesting without competing with the subtle colour changes, and the border forms points that line up with the angles of the diamond lace.
This is a crescent-shaped shawlette worked from the top down starting with a Garter Tab Cast On. The first section is worked in Garter Stitch in Colour 1. The lace section, which includes alternating garter and stockinette stitch diamonds, is then worked in Colour 2. The shawlette is finished with a garter stitch edging in Colour 1.
